New World Timber Frame go to Finland
Our Director (Chris Stringer) has been to visit the source of much of our timber supply. As part of our environmental policy it is important to see where and how our timber is produced. Chris travelled though Finland visiting three saw mills, watched trees being harvested and visited the ship that brings the timber back to the UK. In Finland as with all our timber suppliers, they manage their forest in such a way that they are sustainable and in most cases they are actually growing. Please take a look at the photos below.
Trees being harvested.
This machine cuts down the trees and the on board computer works out where to cut the logs to obtain the maximum amount of timber from each tree.

(Taken from a distance since it's not safe to get near this machine while it's working).
Logs being sorted by size at the sawmill

A log going into the sawmill.
This log has been striped of bark and is ready to go through the saw.

In one process the log is transformed into six planks of timber.

The planks are then sorted and stacked ready to be kiln dried; the drying process takes around five days.
